HeForShe Father/Daughter Dinner Dance on Feb. 29th

The “HeForShe Father/Daughter Dinner Dance”, sponsored by Second Chance Last  Opportunity (SCLO), is set for Saturday, February 29th at the Bayfront Community Center, 803 N. Tamiami Trail in Sarasota.  The event will be held from 6:00 to 9:00 p.m.  SCLO is partnering with the Gulf Coast Chapter of UN Women USA to sponsor this free dinner dance to encourage men—fathers, uncles, stepfathers, brothers and other male role models—to support the aspirations and gender equality of the young women in their lives.

Girls between the age of 2 -0 16 are invited to participate but must be accompanied by an adult male role model.  In addition to dinner and dance with a live DJ, the evening will include video clips and presentations related to gender equality and men’s role in gender equality.  Participants will receive corsages, t-shirts and attendance certificates.  In instances where a father or other adult male role model cannot be present due to circumstances such as work schedule, etc., mothers can attend.  Role models from the community are being invited to attend to serve as ushers and to help facilitate the event.

Created by UN Women, HeForShe is a solidarity movement which provides a systematic approach and a targeted platform on which men and boys can engage and become change agents towards the achievement of gender equality. The innovative approach to addressing gender inequality has resulted in gained momentum around gender talks.  According to UN Women, achieving gender equality requires an inclusive approach that both recognizes men and boys as partners for women’s rights, and acknowledges how they also benefit from this equality. Since the launch of HeForShe campaign in September 2014, hundreds of thousands of men from around the world including Hollywood actor Matt Damon and Ex-President Barack Obama have endorsed the movement.
