Westcoast Black Theatre Troupe Opens 2026–27 Season With Duke Ellington’s Sophisticated Ladies

The Sarasota company launches its “Rhapsodies of Rhythm” season with a live-band revue featuring more than two dozen songs and performances through Nov. 22.

SARASOTA, Fla. — Westcoast Black Theatre Troupe (WBTT) opens its 2026–27 MainStage season with Sophisticated Ladies, a jazz revue celebrating the music of Duke Ellington.

The production runs Oct. 14 through Nov. 22 at the Donelly Theatre, 1012 N. Orange Ave. in Sarasota. The show launches WBTT’s “Rhapsodies of Rhythm” season with live music, vocals and dance inspired by Ellington’s era.

The original Broadway production featured Gregory Hines and Phyllis Hyman and received eight Tony Award nominations, winning two. The revue brings together more than two dozen songs associated with Ellington and his musical world, including “Take the ‘A’ Train,” “Satin Doll,” “Mood Indigo” and “Sophisticated Lady.”

The production pairs powerhouse vocals and choreography with a live band, lush arrangements and jazz-era style.

“What better way to kick off WBTT’s ‘Rhapsodies of Rhythm’ season than by celebrating the amazing Edward Kennedy ‘Duke’ Ellington! His artistry is legendary and in so many ways encapsulates what this season’s theme is all about,”
