BHS Students Book It With Kwame

“The words with music, though!” “Poetry can help you to express feelings and other things throughout life.” “I loved it so much – he’s real.” “Kwame inspired me; I’m actually going to try to write poetry…”
These comments came from some of the 50 Booker High students who enjoyed a morning of poetry with New York Times best-selling award author Kwame Alexander, who recently visited Selby Library to promote his 28th book, “Swing.”
Students in grades 9-12 were riveted in their seats enjoying the spoken word, sometimes set to music by Kwame’s guitarist, Randy Preston. Booker students were treated to lunch after the event through a contribution from Mr. and Mrs. David Shapiro. The event was held to celebrate Teen Read Week, and the partnership between the Sarasota County Libraries and the Sarasota County Schools resulted in free books – signed the author – and transportation for the field trip.
