COACH EDDIE SHANNON RECEIVES HUMANITARIAN AWARD
BY RITA SMITH
The Lincoln Memorial Academy bestows its first Humanitarian Award to Coach Eddie Shannon. Coach Shannon was chosen for his dedication to the students at Lincoln Memorial High School and the unquestionable impact he had on their lives both on and off the field.
Notably, an incident Coach Shannon recalls (in the through the tunnel documentary) happened shortly after the schools had been integrated. Wheeler Leath reached out and asked Coach Shannon to come to the newly integrated Manatee High School to help de-escalate some of the racial tension that was erupting on campus. When Coach Shannon exclaimed he was sick with the flu virus.
Wheeler Leath said emphatically “well bring it with you!” The Award honoring Coach Shannon was presented recently at the Palmetto High School.
