NEWTOWN’S GLOSSIE ATKINS CELEBRATES 101 YEARS OLD

A centenarian is a person who lives to – or beyond – the age of
100 years. A few years ago, the United Nations estimated that there were
316,600 living centenarians worldwide. Included in that number, is Mrs.
Glossie Nettie Atkins, who recently celebrated her 101st
birthday with a gathering of family and friends at the Robert L. Taylor
Community Complex on December 4th.
Many of the friends she
fellowships with at the Senior Friendship Center’s program each week
were on hand, along with family members.
Mrs. Atkins was born in
Ocala, Florida on December 3, 1917. She is the mother of Sarasota’s
first African American mayor, Fredd Atkins, and has been a surronior
Friendship Center, she joins other women of Newtown to crochet gate
parent to many children in the community. She worked as a domestic
sewing, cooking and cleaning for over 35 years. At Sescarves, quilts,
