REID HOUSE CELEBRATES YEAR ONE COMMUNITY SUPPORT NEEDED TO PRESERVE BLACK HISTORY
Sarasota, FL – The newly renovated Leonard Reid House is a year old. The frame vernacular structure, built in 1926 opened to the public during the holidays last year. It is listed on the National Register of Historic Places (2002). The Sarasota African American Cultural Coalition (SAACC) marked the major milestone with a donor appreciation event on December 3. Top donors and early champions of the project viewed the powerful exhibition, “When I Rise Up: The Power of Black Artists.” The show features paintings by icons of the Harlem Renaissance such as Romare Bearden, Jacob Lawrence, Elizabeth Catlett and contemporary Black artists inspired by them. Artists Gale Fulton Ross and Eleanor Merritt have paintings in the show.
Live jazz filled the house and poetry by period writers grace the walls near artists’ biographies. It was a celebration and a call-to-action compelling residents to join efforts to preserve, amplify and teach African American arts, culture, and history.
“As we reflect on this incredible year, we are also looking ahead. The support we’ve received from our initial donors was vital, but sustaining and expanding our mission requires new voices, new advocates, and new resources,” said Vickie Oldham, SAACC’s President.
Your Support Matters The Reid House stands as a symbol of resilience and progress. Our accomplishments are documented, yet the work to safeguard Sarasota’s African American history is far from over. Contributions enabled SAACC to:
• Renovate the Reid House and maintain its grounds.
• Offer dynamic programming and exhibitions such as “Beaches, Benches and Boycotts,” and “Rise Up.”
• Inspire GenNext artists through educational initiatives that celebrate Black art and history.
