The U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs awarded $113.3 million to 42 Florida community organizations to help veterans who are homeless or at risk of losing their housing. The grants, awarded September 14, will support services during fiscal year 2027.
The Florida grants are part of more than $1.17 billion awarded to 680 organizations nationwide. The VA says it helped house 51,936 homeless veterans in fiscal year 2025, the highest total in seven years.
The money will be distributed through two programs: Supportive Services for Veteran Families (SSVF) and Grant and Per Diem (GPD). The grants go to community organizations—not directly to individual veterans.
SSVF funding is intended to help organizations prevent housing loss, find more suitable housing for veterans and their families, and quickly rehouse those experiencing homelessness.
GPD funding supports transitional housing and related services. It can also help veterans remain in their current housing while receiving support to move toward long-term stability. The program includes specialized housing and services for women veterans and veterans who are chronically mentally ill, frail or elderly. citeturn105336view0
“At Bay Pines VA, we understand that safe, stable housing is an important foundation for Veterans to build healthier, more secure lives,” said David VanMeter, director of the Bay Pines VA Healthcare System. “These grants strengthen the community partnerships that help us connect Veterans and their families with the housing resources and supportive services they need to move toward lasting stability.”
