Alpha Kappa Alpha Honors Dr. King’s Legacy with an HBCU for Life College Fair

Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority Incorporated®, Lambda Omicron Omega Chapter, Honors Dr. King’s Legacy with an HBCU for Life College Fair

Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Incorporated® is an international service organization that was founded on the campus of Howard University in Washington, D.C. in 1908. It is the oldest Greek-letter organization established by African-American, college-educated women. Alpha Kappa Alpha is comprised of more than 300,000 members in 1,008 graduate and undergraduate chapters in the United States, Liberia, the Bahamas, the U.S. Virgin Islands, Germany, South Korea, Bermuda, Japan, Canada, South Africa and Dubai. Led by International President, Dr. Glenda Baskin Glover, PhD, JD, CPA, Alpha Kappa Alpha cultivates and encourages high scholastic and ethical standards and provides service to all mankind. Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Incorporated®, Lambda Omicron Omega Chapter, in partnership with State College of Florida’s MLK Day of Service Grant, will host an HBCU (historical black colleges & universities) for Life College Fair at Booker High School (Cafeteria), located at 3201 North Orange Avenue, Sarasota, Florida, on January 26, 2019, from 9:00 AM-1:00 PM.

The MLK Day of Service project facilitated by the local chapter of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Incorporated. Communications and solicitations have been extended to district middle and high school administrators and support personnel across Manatee and Sarasota Counties.

Research maintains that HBCUs are an excellent fit for students of color and first-generation students, who produce twenty percent of African-American college graduates, although they represent only three percent of all colleges in the United States. Furthermore, these universities graduate twenty-five percent of African Americans with STEM degrees. These facts can be explored further and substantiated through an article written by Michael Lomax for the United Negro College Fund entitled “Why HBCUs Still Matters?”

Despite the advantages, these universities are still grossly underfunded, and the relevancy fight continues. Because of this, Dr. Glover has led the charge for 2 consecutive years, by raising 1 Million Dollars in A Day to support HBCUs.   Under the auspices of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Incorporated®, an initiative is underway to raise 10 million dollars to support HBCUs.

The members of the local chapter of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, along with its partners, are ready to take up the cause. We are prepared and excited to invite middle and high school students to attend the 2019 HBCU for Life Fair. Students will have an opportunity to interact with and receive information from representatives and alumni of several HBCUs. Workshops will be offered regarding college admissions processes as well as HBCU culture, education, and social setting. Raffles, lunch, and giveaways are planned with students in mind. The event also will provide information gathering for parents.

We would like to think that Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., a “Morehouse” man, will be smiling down on this event and applauding the organizers’ commitment to service. After all, it was he who proclaimed, “Everybody can be great…because anybody can serve.”
