FORMER TEMPO NEWS CO-PUBLISHER INEZ HUNTER PASSED AWAY

INEZ HUNTER PASSED Inez Hunter the former Co-Publisher of TEMPO News passes after a long illness, Monday February 4, 2019.
Inez was the daughter of the late Jerome and Ruth Stevens. Her father was the first Postal mail carrier to deliver mail in Newtown. He was the first black to run for the City Commission for the City of Sarasota. He was also the owner of the now-defunct Stevens Funeral Home, retiring after 40 years.
Inez had a very exciting life. She graduated Magna Cum Laude, from Florida A&M University at the age of 19 with duel majors in Mathematics and Political Science in 1972.
After a brief career as a school teacher at Booker High School at age of 19, teaching twelfth grade math. In 1984, she went back to school to obtain another B.S Degree as a Registered Nurse thereby becoming a traveling nurse working throughout the nation.
Another point of interest, Inez had to get special approval from the Sarasota County School Board to march with her 1972 Sarasota High School Graduation Class because she had already graduated from FAMU in 1972.
Inez returned to Sarasota in 2005 from Greensboro, North Carolina. In 2006, she married Johnny Hunter Sr.
She then became Co-Publisher of TEMPO News.. And after 11 years of marriage it ended in divorce.
During her tenure at TEMPO News, she was very active in the community as Co-Publisher. Inez was appointed to the City of Sarasota Housing Authority where she was a strong advocate for the rights of the tenants and for the minority vendors seeking to do business with the Housing Authority.
Subsequently, her illness forced her to resign.
Inez was a staunch supporter of FAMU Alumni Association. For years she chaired the annual Orange and Green Fundraiser events, raising money to give scholarships to graduating high school seniors.
Inez’s memorial service will be held on Saturday February 9, 2019 at 1:00 pm at Greater Hurst Chapel A.M.E.
