Reid House Breaks Ground on Community Legacy Garden
The Leonard Reid House hosted a groundbreaking for a new community butterfly and pollinator garden. The space, nestled between the paved and gravel parking lots at 2529 N. Orange Avenue, Sarasota, FL now supports butterflies, bees, and other vital pollinators.
It also honors Sarasota’s most influential historical figures through a dedicated legacy walkway. The garden is blooming in vibrant waves of red, yellow, and blue; and serves as both a living classroom and a spot for reflection. It is part of an ongoing effort to highlight environmental stewardship and cultural legacy at the house.
“Lately, it’s exciting to play in the dirt, water, and watch plants produce vegetables, fruit, and flowers,” said Vickie Oldham, President of the Sarasota African American Cultural Coalition.
“The benefits of gardening are so many. I’m saving money, lowering stress levels, and beautifying the environment. This project brings the community together.”
The next planting day with summer campers and volunteers is Thursday, July 31 at 10 a.m.
Other mentoring organizations are invited to join this hands-on effort.
Community members can support the garden by:
• Donating pollinator-friendly plants or garden supplies
• Giving a contribution to help cover materials and installation
• Volunteering time
