9th Annual Big Mama’s Collard Greens Festival Held
Some came with blankets, others came with their lawn chairs; some came for the exhibits and others for the array of food that was available at the 9th Annual Big Mama’s Collard Green Festival this past weekend at the Robert L. Taylor Community Complex. The event celebrated community and culture, bringing together influences from Cajun, Creole, Southern, and Caribbean styles.
At the heart of the festival were the legendary “big mamas,” representing the best-tasting family collard greens recipes, some dating back more than 100 years. In addition, chefs from across Sarasota and Manatee Counties and the Tampa Bay area showcased their dishes and specialty foods. One of the highlights of the festival was the collard green

cook-off, where local residents and restaurant chefs competed for the bragging rights title of “Big Mama”. For the second year in a row, Sarasota resident Latoya Wright, known as the “collard green eggroll queen”, garnered the rights as the first place winner. Second place winner was Ms. Judy’s Soulful Kitchen out of Brandon and third place went to Versatile Café of Sarasota. Over 350 were in attendance who enjoyed great food and entertainment.
Big Mama’s Collard Green Festival is a no-alcohol, family-focused event designed to bring the community together in a safe, welcoming space. Danette Williams is the event coordinator and Valerie Buchand is president.
