SARASOTA MLK COMMITTEE ANNOUNCE 2022 CELEBRATION

The Sarasota MLK Celebration Committee will host the 40th celebration honoring the life of the late Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.  Dr. King was born on January 15, 1929 and was the nation’s most prominent leader in the 20th century struggle for civil rights.  Dr. King was assassinated while in Memphis, Tennessee to help striking sanitation workers.  His legacy lives on and his writings and speeches continue to inspire new generations.

Due of the pandemic, traditional MLK activities honoring Dr. King were not held in 2021.  The 2022 celebration, however, will feature traditional events including the memorial breakfast, historical unity walk, music, food and fun, and other activities, said Jetson Grimes, chairman of the MLK Celebration Committee. “Unfortunately, we will not sponsor the golf tournament but we have other exciting events planned,” he said.  This year, all events hosted by the committee will be held at the Robert L. Taylor Community Complex.

The memorial breakfast will begin at 7:30 a.m.  Community residents and organizations will be recognized for their work in the Sarasota community.  The committee is adhering to CDC guidelines and will practice social distancing so the breakfast will be limited to 300 people.  All tickets must be purchased in advance and no tickets or seats will be available at the door.  For tickets, contact Mae Dixon at 941-266-3217 or Helen James at 941-228-8191.  Tickets are also available for purchase on Eventbrite: https://2022mlkbreakfast.eventbrite.com.  You are encouraged to purchase your tickets early.

Other activities will be announced later.  If you are interested in a sponsorship opportunity, contact Jetson Grimes at 941-780-4060.
