A. JEAN BATTIE SCHOLARSHIPS PRESENTED

The A. Jean Battie Scholarship Fund of Light of the World International Church presented its Sixth Annual 2019 Scholarship Awards on July 28, 2019. The scholarship fund benefits minority students seeking higher education. The fund began as a church initiative to support its graduating high school students, but has since collaborated with other nonprofits, including “Take Stock in Children”, to give to students beyond Light of the World. This year’s awards totaled more than $10,000, the most given so far. Jean Battie taught in the Sarasota County school system for 30 years before retiring in 2006. Established in 2012, the scholarship is designed to extend the legacy of Mrs. Battie’s work in the school system and provide financial aid to students seeking higher education. She was a leading force in raising Black history awareness and establishing programs in Sarasota County.
