KAPPAS HOLD 36TH STEVE LEWIS SCHOLARSHIP LUNCHEON

The Sarasota (FL) Alumni Chapter of Kappa Alpha Psi Fraternity, Inc., in association with Sarasota-Bradenton Kappa Alpha Psi Project Guide Right, Inc., hosted the 36th Annual Steve Lewis Achievement Awards Luncheon on Sat, April 6th at the Robert L. Taylor Community Complex. A native Floridian, Lewis served as a member of the Ninth Calvary of the United States Army during World War II. After completing his education at Florida A&M University, he returned to Palmetto where he was as an educator, church worker and activist. He taught in the Manatee County school system before retiring.

Five young men were recipients of the chapter’s scholarships. They were Bryson Gregory, Jonathan Barroso, Joshua Ogden, Dominick Ventura and Jawan Hayes. Bryson will graduate from Booker High School where he maintains a 3.34 GPA. He has been accepted at Alabama A&M University where he plans to major in Forensic Science. Jonathan will graduate from Sarasota Military Academy where he maintains a 4.3 GPA. His plans are to attend Florida State University and then on to medical school. Joshua is a senior at Booker High School where he maintains a 3.00 GPA. After graduation, he will attend State College of Florida and plans to major in Sports Medicine. Dominick is a senior at Venice High School where his GPA is 4.23. He plans to attend the University of South Florida to major in Business. He would like to become a Financial Advisor. Jawan is a senior at Lakewood Ranch High School where he maintains a 3.32 GPA. He plans to attend Florida Gulf Coast University to major in Nursing. The 2019 Citizens of the Year recognized by the chapter were Lem Andrews from Sarasota County and George Woodie from Manatee County. Andrews has served as an educator, college and career advisor at Booker High School and is involved with several organizations including Take Stock in Children and State College of Florida’s College Reach Out Program. Woodie is the co-owner of Westside Funeral Home in Palmetto. He is a licensed funeral director and embalmer and has been a pillar of the community and supporter of the development of youth. Omar Edwards is the chapter’s Polemarch and Keenan Wooten is president of Project Guide Right.
