THE TALES OF TWO CANDIDATES SHAPIRO VS. BUCHANAN

BY STAFF POLITICAL WRITER

Currently there’s a fierce race going on for the Florida 16th Congressional District between incumbent Congressman Vern Buchanan and David Shapiro. This race has more intensity than any other race in the areas. So let’s look at the two. David Shapiro’s candidacy is very problematic. It appears that his son, Adam Shapiro, 28, has a history of racist comments on social media, including using the “N” word. Although Adam apologized after being exposed for his slanderous remarks; unfortunately for David Shapiro, from the lenses of the African American community, the damage has already been done. Because, one key fact is: if you make statements that are condescending to the jury, and subsequently ask the jury to disregard the statements, they may be discarded from the transcript, but not from the minds of the Jurors. It’s true one can’t really blame all the actions of a son or daughter on the parent, but in reality, the fruit doesn’t fall too far from the tree. Is there positive history on the side of David Shapiro with the African American community? I can’t honestly say I know of any. But, Vern Buchanan and his family have been good corporate citizens and community partners for at least 23 years, and I have first hand knowledge of his contributions. The Buchanan name and corporate brand have contributed thousands of dollars to non-political causes in the Sarasota and Manatee County African American Communities. He has been a pioneer in opening once closed Management doors for African Americans in the auto industry. Remember,

“The proof of character is also in the pudding.”

The Vern Buchanan that is being demonized in the television ads is not the Vern Buchanan I know. The Vern Buchanan I know is a philanthropist. Can David Shapiro show a similar track record? It is a long and complicated process to change laws and policies of this nation. All the members of congress must work together collectively to get things done. It therefore, requires a new Congressional person years to establish contacts and influence to make a change. He must be influential, of good character and a person of integrity. In my opinion, Vern Buchanan possesses the important qualities to be an effective Congressman and should remain our Representative for the 16th Congressional District.
