Sarasota’s Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Memorial Park Receives $1.1 Million Upgrade

The park’s redevelopment will add accessible walkways, a new event plaza, shaded gazebos, recreation tables, improved lighting, and expanded landscaping.

SARASOTA, Fla. — Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Memorial Park is temporarily closed while the City of Sarasota completes a $1.1 million redevelopment project designed to improve accessibility, recreation, landscaping, and visitor comfort.

The project will bring several upgrades to the popular community park, including an ADA-compliant sidewalk system, a redesigned parking lot, a new event plaza, and three shaded gazebos.

Residents and visitors will also find an expanded activity area with permanent pingpong and domino tables. Additional improvements include upgraded park lighting, new seating throughout the grounds, refreshed landscaping, and eight new canopy trees—including four live oaks that will provide additional shade as they mature.

Earlier this year, the Sarasota Bay Estuary Program added a kayak launch and waterside seating area, creating new opportunities for residents and visitors to enjoy the park’s waterfront setting. The city’s current redevelopment project will build on those improvements by making the park more accessible, comfortable, and useful for community gatherings and everyday recreation.

The City of Sarasota is asking residents and visitors to remain patient while construction continues. Once complete, the project is expected to create a more welcoming, accessible, and active public space for people of all ages.

Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Memorial Park is expected to reopen later this year. The city will provide additional updates as construction progresses.
